About five years ago, I bought a state of the art Epson projector. I bought it online and I must say I can’t even remember the name of the online shop.
The projector is still great and working fabulously. Twice a year, I get an email from Linda, their sales person. She asks me if the projector is still working ok, and if there is anything else I need such as a replacement lamp. When she emailed me a couple of weeks ago, I asked her how much such a lamp is and they are not cheap ($ 570!). I said I would think about it as I was very busy and TRENZ was coming up. I then filed away her email. Today, Linda sent me another email, following up on my interest in the replacement lamp. I know I should buy one as a backup but I probably wouldn’t have done it right now if she hadn’t emailed me. As Linda has provided me with such good service all these years, I will be buying the lamp off her. If she hadn’t sent me these emails, there is no way I would have bought the lamp of this anonymous-online-shop- that-I-can’t- even-remember-the-name-of. So, the moral of the story is: keep in touch with your previous customers! There is a good chance they will be buying from you again! Have a great week! Marijke

I just got back from a great TRENZ - my 15th! (well, waiting for my flight at Auckland airport at the moment!)
I send wholesalers regular emails newsletters to update them on the products of the Smartourism Marketing Group (www.smartourism.co.nz) and it was great to hear how much they enjoy these updates and find the information useful! Email marketing can be one of the most effective marketing tools there is. We are all getting more and more messages into our inbox: emails, newsletters, social media alerts and more. And then there are other communication apps such as WhatsApp, Viber, and Skype. Ok, so how can you get your email recipients to read your messages? Here is the latest: Mobile friendly Almost 50% of emails are opened on mobile devices. So it is important that your e-newsletter is easy to read on mobile devices. Keep it short! Keep your message short so it’s easy for people to quickly read it and respond where needed. When sending an e-newsletter, the easiest way is to have an intro, then a link to more detailed information. This will also enable you to monitor how many people read it, which is very valuable information! Personalise it! If your message is personalised (like the emails you receive from me!), they are likely to be opened 6 times more than without their name. Make it relevant! Ensure the message you send is relevant to the person reading it. If it’s not, they tend to delete it. If you have a large database, you could split it in different target groups and tailor your message to their needs. (This is assuming you have one!). If you haven't updated it for a while, here are 4 reasons you should do so if you want to stay competitive!
1. Your customers have changed. You might have new markets wanting your product or service. Think about: Who are your customers now compared to a few years ago? 2. You have new products or are thinking of developing new products. This will probably require a different marketing strategy. Think about: How could I market my new products to my existing and new customers? 3. Marketing techniques are changing. In the past, you may have spent more on advertising, whilst now, businesses need to become more internet and social media savvy. Think about: How have you marketed your products in the past and are you making the most of new technologies? Is the marketing you are currently doing working for you? How do you know? Do you have measurements in place to monitor these? 4. Your distribution has changed. Your customers are buying your products in different ways. Think about: How have I distributed my products in the past and what could be a more effective way to do so? Spend some time updating your marketing plan. If you need help, a great way to learn about the latest marketing trends and get support along the way is to attend one of our Marketing for Success Programmes. Watch this space in the next few weeks – new dates will be announced soon! Have a nice weekend and till next week! Marijke In a week's time, I am off to TRENZ, New Zealand's largest tourism tradeshow. Even though it's the 15th time I am attending it, I always try to improve what I do. At TRENZ, I will be meeting with 50 tourism from all over the world. They are meeting with 50 different tourism businesses. So, it's important to stand out - to provide them with information that they will remember. Here are three elements of getting people to remember what you say. (Of course this applies to all presentations!)
Till next week! Have a great weekend, Marijke
